Pre Rhinoplasty Visit

Typically scheduled 2-3 weeks prior to the rhinoplasty procedure, a pre-rhinoplasty visit with your surgeon helps ensure a more safe and successful experience on the day of your rhinoplasty. A number of important issues are reviewed and discussed during this visit.

Rhinoplasty goals

The cosmetic goals of your rhinoplasty will be reviewed on your pre-rhinoplasty visit and the plans will be solidified. This gives one more chance for you and your surgeon to prioritize your desires and goals so that you can get the most out of your rhinoplasty procedure.

Decision to use grafts

Typical sites for rhinoplasty grafts include the septum, the ear, or the rib. Your surgeon will discuss the likelihood of grafting with you and discuss his/her preferred graft site.

Medical History

To ensure your safety, a thorough medical history is taken to make sure that you don't have any medical conditions that may pose a problem to you before, during, or after your rhinoplasty procedure. Your current health conditions as well as your medications and drug allergies will be reviewed.

Blood pressure

High blood pressure can increase your risk of bleeding (having a nosebleed) after rhinoplasty. Your blood pressure will be checked during the pre-rhinoplasty visit and it will also be regularly checked during the rhinoplasty procedure.

Medications and Supplements to avoid

Some over the counter medications, prescription medications, and supplements can increase your risk of bleeding by "thinning" your blood. Aspirin is one of the most common blood thinners used and should be stopped at least 2 weeks before rhinoplasty. You will be given a more complete list of medications to avoid [16kb PDF] at the time of your pre-rhinoplasty visit.

Rhinoplasty photographs

Photos are very helpful to the rhinoplasty surgeon in planning and performing your rhinoplasty procedure. Dr. Naficy routinely has the patient's photos up in the operating room to help him fine-tune his surgical plan.

Prescriptions

To help make your recovery as safe and comfortable as possible we prescribe a number of medications at the time of the pre-rhinoplasty visit. The include the following:

  • Anti-anxiety - typically Valium to help relax you before the procedure
  • Antibiotic - typically Keflex or Clindamycin to reduce risk of infection
  • Pain medication - typically Percocet, Vicodin, or Tylenol #3
  • Anti-nausea medication - typically Phenergan, Zofran, or Scopolamine
