Cost of Rhinoplasty

Cost of rhinoplasty may be an important deciding factor. Most of us have a budget and all of us would like to get a good deal. But any consideration of price must be weighed against value, in this case something you will be wearing on your face everyday for the rest of your life.

The old axiom 'you get what you pay for' usually holds true in rhinoplasty surgery. Surgeons who markedly reduce their price below the competition usually have a reason, and typically not a good one: they're either not busy or they work on volume (doing many procedures and doing them quickly). Worst of all, it can mean he or she isn't very good. Rhinoplasty costs vary greatly from surgeon to surgeon and can depend on a number of variables:

  • Experience of the surgeon - needless to say, with rhinoplasty you want a surgeon with plenty of experience, ideally >10 years of performing >100 rhinoplasty procedures per year
  • Amount of time the surgeon spends working on your nose - some surgeon perform rhinoplasty in 30-45 minutes while others take 2-3 hours. Although time spent is not the only indicator of quality, it often gives you a sense of the amount of 'detail work' the surgeon performs as it is rare to perform rhinoplasty with all the necessary finishing touches in 30-45 minutes
  • Complexity of the work required - rhinoplasty is rarely easy, but certain rhinoplasty procedures are more difficult than average.
  • Whether grafting is needed - cartilage grafting adds time and complexity to your rhinoplasty.
  • Whether breathing work is needed - this also adds time and complexity above and beyond a standard rhinoplasty. However, the extra cost for the breathing work is often billable to your insurance.
  • Where the surgery is performed - ambulatory surgery centers are a much better value than hospitals or hospital-based outpatient surgery centers.
